No Backyard Slaughter

No Backyard Slaughter focuses on backyard slaughterhouses that are located in predominantly BIPOC communities. BIPOC are affected disproportionately by the industry, yet often lack the resources to fight back against the cruelty taking place in their own communities.

This is why APEX Advocacy helps communities of color defend themselves against animal industries through community organizing and activism.

 Phase I

Bradford’s Livestock

Our first objective was to advocate for shutting down Bradford’s Livestock, an unauthorized backyard slaughterhouse operating in a residential neighborhood in Lithonia, GA.

The Case

On March 1, 2019, the DeKalb County government issued a cease and desist order against Bradford’s Livestock, a backyard slaughterhouse operating in a residential neighborhood. For over 3 years DeKalb County has not enforced its cease and desist order.

Our actions

We demanded that the DeKalb County government do what is right and stand up to backyard slaughterhouses.

APEX has spoken to members of the affected community, organized protests and leafletting events, run an email petition which has received 1,700+ signatures, and attended council meetings to raise awareness and demand change.

This is an ongoing campaign. To follow along with the latest updates or help us in our action, you can visit the No Backyard Slaughter website.
